Helping Seniors Stay Connected: Choosing The Right Technology

Embracing technology can help seniors stay connected with their friends and family when in-person visits are not possible. Choosing the right device and settings is an important first step toward making technology accessible for our senior friends. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a device.

Type: While cellphones and tablets are modern and may seem user-friendly, it is important to remember that these devices may be unfamiliar to some seniors. A simple telephone might be the best choice for your loved one because it is likely to be more familiar and easier to use.

Specialty Options: There is a wide range of devices designed specifically for seniors. For example, devices like the GrandPad and phones with large buttons simplify the communication process. Consider products like these if you think your loved one might struggle with more complex devices.

Accessibility: If your loved one has a modern cellphone, you also have the option of adjusting its settings to make it easier to use. To make an iPhone more accessible for a senior, turn on Assistive Access in Settings for a simplified interface, enlarge the text under Display & Brightness, and simplify the home screen to show only essential apps, such as Phone and Messages.

Instructions: Written instructions can provide assistance when memory fails. Consider writing clear, easy-to-understand notes for your loved ones. Writing down important phone numbers can be more effective than expecting your loved one to search through their contacts to make a call.

Reaching Out: Instead of waiting to be contacted, reach out to your elderly friends and loved ones. Scheduling a specific time to talk each day can be helpful because it establishes a routine. If they don't answer, be persistent. Wait a little while and try again later.

Human connection is widely considered a cornerstone of good health. Make sure you stay in touch with your loved ones, even when you cannot be there in person.
